Monkeypox is a viral disease that affects humans and animals. The disease is similar to smallpox but less severe. The stages of monkeypox in humans can be divided into three phases:
The first phase of monkeypox begins with fever, headache, muscle aches, backache, swollen lymph nodes, chills, and exhaustion. This phase typically lasts for 1 to 3 days.
After the initial symptoms, a rash develops. The rash starts as small pimples that turn into fluid-filled blisters and eventually form crusts. The rash usually lasts for 2 to 4 weeks.
At first in the rash phase, Macular rash appears, often beginning on the face and then spreading to other parts of the body. This stage lasts for 1-2 days.
The rash typically progresses from macular-flat to papular-raised lesions. This stage lasts for 1-2 days
After papules, the lesions then usually become vesicular bumps (filled with a clear fluid). This stage lasts for 1-2 days
The lesions then usually become pustules (filled with an opaque fluid-Pus) - sharply raised, usually round and firm to the touch
Finally, lesions typically develop a umbilication [depression in the center]. This stage remains for approximately 5 to 7 days before beginning to crust.
At the end of the second week, pustules became crusted and scabbed over. Scabs will remain for about a week before beginning to fall off. This stage lasts for approximately 7-14 days
This phase begins when the rash starts to heal. The crusts begin to fall off, and the patient's condition improves. This phase can last for several weeks, and the patient may experience scarring where the rash was located
